The houses round here
Barnsley has a handful of house types, and each one wants treating differently. Knowing which you have is half the job.
Stone terraces and cottages
Solid sandstone walls with no cavity, common from Worsbrough out to Penistone. Lime inside and out keeps them dry. Hard cement and gypsum tend to hold damp in.
Brick terraces
The pit-village streets of Cudworth, Royston, Wombwell and Goldthorpe. Expect lath and plaster ceilings, uneven walls and rear offshots that benefit from render.
Pebbledashed semis
Estates built from the 1920s to the 1950s, across Athersley, Kendray, Lundwood and Monk Bretton. The dash can usually be covered once it has been tested.
New builds and extensions
Blockwork and plasterboard. Straightforward to skim and render, as long as joints are taped and meshed so drying cracks do not follow.
Working in a house you live in
Most of our jobs are in homes with people, pets and carpets in them. We plan the work around that.

Common questions
Do you do small plastering jobs?
Yes. One ceiling, a single wall, a patch where a radiator has moved or a chimney breast that wants squaring up are all normal jobs for us. Tell us what it is and we will say straight away whether we can fit it in.
How much does plastering or rendering cost in Barnsley?
We do not put prices on the website because no two rooms or walls are the same. The size, the state of what is there now and how easy it is to get at all change the figure.
We come and look, then give you a written price for the work described. If something turns up that could not be seen at the visit, we show you and agree it before carrying on.
Can you plaster inside and render outside as one job?
Yes, and on an extension or a full refurbishment it usually makes sense. One firm does both, the order of work is planned once and there is nobody to chase between trades.
How long before I can paint new plaster?
Wait until the wall has dried to an even pale pink with no dark patches. For a skim on plasterboard that is often a few days. Thicker plaster on brick or stone can take a couple of weeks, longer in a cold house. Start with a watered-down mist coat so the paint soaks in and grips.
Can you skim over Artex?
In most cases, yes. If the Artex is firmly stuck we seal it and skim over the top, which gives a flat ceiling without disturbing it. Artex put up before 2000 can contain asbestos, so it should never be sanded or scraped off without being tested first.
Do you work on old stone houses?
Yes. Stone cottages and terraces around Penistone, Silkstone, Cawthorne and Worsbrough have solid walls that need to breathe. We use lime-based plaster and render on those where the wall calls for it, because modern gypsum and cement can trap damp in them.
Will there be a lot of mess?
Plastering is wet work and some dust and splashing cannot be avoided, but it can be kept under control. Floors are covered, doorways are sheeted where needed, water and mixing are kept outside when the weather allows, and we clean up at the end of each day.
Can you render in winter?
On most days, yes, but not all. Render must not go on in frost, on a soaked wall or when the temperature is close to freezing, so winter jobs are planned with some slack in the dates. Indoor plastering carries on all year.
